be you, with love
- ABOUT THE ARTIST -
Shemelle Soyebo, also known as SoyShem, is a fine artist based in London. Born with the gift of being able to inspire and empower through her bold and bright paintings depicting powerful people of colour in her community.
She paints on canvas, using only acrylics to showcase the vibrancy and colour in her work. Shining a spotlight on the black diaspora while incorporating and showcasing her vision of self-love, self-worth, Mother Earth, and freedom of the mind. The artist uses her paintings as a vehicle to take her audience on a journey; expressing and embracing what she sees, feels, and experiences along the way and leaving it all on the canvas.
Since childhood SoyShem has had a large and creative imagination, but was socially awkward and suffered from anxiety. She would find her imagination would prove useful whilst developing her skills, using her love of art to ease her anxiety and release her from her awkward tendencies.
Growing up, the artist didn't see herself represented in visual art. She saw there was a space that could be filled portraying harmony between all races and cultures, highlighted in her art, using her mixed Nigerian and Bajan heritage to influence her style.

- THE MISSION -
Photo taken at the Black history month group exhibition in 2020 held at Westfield Stratford in East London.
SoyShem's mission is to nuance the idea that "Black Art" should be categorised as a genre within itself, as opposed to simply being "art", by creating a place in the mainstream for works like hers.
The artist believes that she can, through her art, encourage people to question any stereotypes or prejudgements they may have about black or multi-ethnic people. She uses her work to display purposeful images, depicting positive representations of people that identify with the African diaspora to effect small yet meaningful change.
We are all unique, powerful, and beautiful beings - and while finding opportunities can be challenging, it's not impossible! Her mission is to inspire you to apply yourself to what you love and follow your heart, no matter what society dictates.
SoyShem finds comfort in painting the places she creates in her imagination to where she escapes to manage the shared sense of loss she and many black people feel after being displaced geographically and losing connection to their culture.
Be you, with love, and create a beautiful world for us all.
